ANNA AND I were sitting on the back deck. It was one oâclock in the afternoon, and I was having my first mug of coffee of the day. Man, was it a good thing I had the week off.
That hadnât been my first reaction when I heard the city was going to shut down most operations for two weeks during the holidays. Apparently they did that every yearâonly kept on a skeleton crew. And no work meant no pay. I had enough money put aside to be okayâbarelyâbut it still made me mad.
Until today.
âSo.â Anna set down her mug. âYou and Lori stayed up awhile last night.â
âYeah, we walked to the park. Got to talking, lost track of time. She up yet?â
âI think so. I heard the shower a little while ago.â
âWhereâs Mike?â
âGone to the store for me.â
Good. There was something I wanted to ask Anna, and I needed privacy to do it. âWant more coffee?â Stalling, I stood up to go refill my cup. When I got back, I handed Annaâs mug back to her. âYou know that stuff I told you? About the foster home and the fire?â
âYeah.â
âHave you mentioned any of that to Lori?â
âNo, itâs never come up.â
Relief.
âWhy do you ask? Are you thinking she should know about it?â
âI guess. I mean, I donât know. Sometime. Of course. Iâd like to be the one to tell her is all.â
âI understand. And I give you my word I wonât mention it. The story is yours to tell whenever you think the time is right.â
Anna stood up and stretched. âThought Iâd make pizza for dinner. Lori loves my homemade crust.â
âI knew she was a girl with good taste.â Annaâs pizza was amazing, especially the crust. Who knew you could even make pizza at home?
âLori has extraordinary taste. And not just in food.â Anna raised her eyebrows over her mug.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Like I didnât know.
âNothing.â She shrugged. âJust an observation; thatâs all.â
